Copenhagen

Copenhagen

Copenhagen dates back almost a thousand years and started as a fishing village before becoming Denmark’s capital in the 15th century. The city has more than 400 miles of dedicated bike lanes, and most locals cycle everywhere, there are more bikes than cars. Tivoli Gardens is the world’s second-oldest amusement park, and the famous Little Mermaid statue along the harbor draws thousands of visitors each year. The Danish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world, and Copenhagen is often ranked among the happiest and safest cities globally.

The First 24 Hours

Wed, Aug 20

We had an easy and relaxed departure from Boise at 2pm, excited to start our journey. After a smooth flight, we hung out in Seattle during a four-hour layover, which gave us time to stretch our legs and grab some food. Our next stop was Reykjavik, Iceland, where we just had a quick one-hour layover before hopping on our final flight. Almost missed the flight, had to run for several mins to get in right before they closed the gate. All together, our trip to Copenhagen only took about 18 hours, but it seemed a LOT longer.

Carie and Scott left SFO with a direct flight to CPH. None of us got much sleep. 😦

The Iceland Air plane was bright, modern, and comfortable—an Airbus 321 neo. The staff were wonderfully proper and polite.

We all arrived at CPH about the same time (3:45pm), so we hopped on the Metro (after a fair amount of fiddling with the App) and went to our stop at ‎⁨Kongens Nytorv⁩.

After checking into our hotel, we walked to the ‎⁨Nyhavn⁩ district and had a lovely dinner on the water.

Christiania⁩

Friday, Aug 23

Started with coffee and a quick bite at a local coffee shop, then started walking. We visited the ‎⁨Christiania⁩ neighborhood and walked a wide loop around to Tivoli. Dinner at Europa later on.

Our friends John and Kaisa just happened to be in Copenhagen at the same time, so we joined them for drinks at the floating Kayak Bar.

Tour & Tivoli

Saturday, Aug 23

Late start, but coffee shop again for some caffeine, then off to meetup with Scott's family. We had a great time, they are lovely people.

Ate some Smørrebrød (delicious) and took a canal boat tour. It was a great way to learn about the area.

Saturday Night

Went to Tivoli Gardens, the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world. We saw a danish band called Shu-bi-dua, it was a crowd favorite with old and young singing along with every song. We couldn't understand a word, but they were really entertaining. Fireworks followed, it was an unexpected, really fun experience.
