Bruges, Belgium
Monday, Sep 1. Took a short train ride from Ghent for a day trip to Bruges. Bruges has a rich history as a medieval trading center and was the capital of the County of Flanders starting in the 11th century. The city became a major commercial and cultural hub in Europe, famed for its canals and Gothic architecture. The walk into the city from the station is picturesque, following a canal and passing by a beautiful park. Once inside the historic district, it is easy to get lost among the countless side streets lined with chocolate shops and restaurants. Several beautiful churches are scattered throughout the old town. The city was busier than expected for a Monday but not overwhelming. After a tasty lunch, spent the afternoon exploring by foot, then caught an open air bus tour which offered a great overview of the city’s main sights and plenty of local history. After hours of walking and sightseeing, returned to Gent by train and had a late dinner.
